FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM FOR CLINICAL SUCCESS THROUGH NEGOTIATION SKILLS
Dental Education unit in association with CDE (Continuing Dental Education) cell of our institution organized an insightful faculty development programme on “Clinical Success through Negotiation Skills” for all the faculty members and post graduate students on 4th September 2026. The event was an IQAC initiative. The session aimed to enhance awareness and implementation of developing strong negotiation skills which contribute significantly to clinical confidence, patient satisfaction, ethical practice and overall clinical success and quality standards in clinical research and practice among faculty members and students. The event featured Dr.Sunil Chiplunkar M Pharm, MBA (marketing) PhD, a renowned Senior expert in pharmaceutical profession with 30+ years of experience in pharmaceutical marketing, training, sales and business development. Currently Dr.Sunil Chiplunkar serving as Vice President – Business Development, Group Pharmaceuticals, Bangalore. The session began with a welcome address by Dr.Chithra Melavanki , who highlighted the objectives of the workshop and the importance of adhering to globally accepted clinical standards. Dr. Sunil Chiplunkar presentation included real-world examples, current regulatory insights, and practical challenges in clinical research. An interactive Q&A session followed, where attendees atively participated and sought clarity on various aspects of ethical clinical practice and research documentation. In a warm and respectful gesture, Dr. Preethi Kusugal felicitated Dr. Sunil Chiplunkar, appreciating his valuable insights and contributions to the academic session. The workshop saw enthusiastic participation from faculty members. The event concluded with a vote of thanks and a renewed commitment by the institution to promote ethical excellence in clinical practice and education

Curriculum Committee in association with the CDE cell and Academic Council of Maratha Mandal’s Nathajirao G. Halgekar Institute of Dental Sciences & Research Centre, Belagavi, organized a one-day Faculty Development Programme (FDP) titled “Revisiting Curriculum Development in the Context of Competency- and Outcome-Based Dental Education – The Need of the Hour” on 9 September 2026.
Total 50 staff delegates were part of the program. The FDP credited with 6 KSDC credit points.
The program was designed to strengthen faculty understanding and application of competency- and outcome-based dental education (CBDE/OBDE) and to familiarize participants with Kern’s Six-Step Curriculum Development Framework. The programme aimed to facilitate systematic curriculum planning, constructive alignment of learning outcomes, teaching-learning activities and assessment, curriculum mapping, evaluation, and continuous quality improvement.
The programme commenced with registration and a pre-test, followed by an introduction to competency- and outcome-based dental education and curriculum development.
The morning sessions covered the principles of CBDE/OBDE and Kern’s Six Steps, with particular emphasis on problem identification, general needs assessment and targeted needs assessment. Participants subsequently engaged in a group activity on needs assessment.
The post-lunch sessions focused on formulation of competencies, goals and measurable learning objectives, followed by an activity on writing objectives. Participants were then introduced to educational strategies, assessment planning, curriculum evaluation and continuous improvement.
The programme concluded with group presentations, post-test, feedback and valedictory proceedings.
The FDP emphasized the shift from traditional content-oriented curriculum planning towards a learner-centred, competency- and outcome-based approach. The key concepts discussed included competency, learning outcomes, learning objectives, constructive alignment and curriculum mapping.
Special emphasis was placed on constructive alignment, ensuring that learning outcomes, teaching-learning activities and assessment methods are appropriately matched. The handout provided tobacco cessation counselling as an example, where demonstration, role-play and simulated-patient practice could be aligned with OSCE-based assessment and structured feedback. Interactive Learning activities provided faculty with opportunities to apply the principles discussed during the programme rather than limiting the FDP to didactic teaching. The programme highlighted that competency-based assessment should demonstrate what the learner can actually do, rather than assessing knowledge alone.
Curriculum mapping was emphasized as an important mechanism to identify whether competencies are appropriately introduced, reinforced, mastered and assessed, while also identifying gaps and unnecessary duplication.

Faculty was encouraged to view curriculum development as an iterative, systematic and learner-centred process. The central reflection highlighted during the FDP was that effective teaching and assessment begin
with clarity regarding what learners should be able to demonstrate. The Faculty Development Programme provided a structured and interactive platform for revisiting contemporary approaches to curriculum development in dental education. Through lectures, practical activities, curriculum mapping, assessment planning, group presentations and reflection, participants were oriented towards applying Kern’s Six-Step Curriculum Development Framework within competency- and outcome-based dental education.
The programme is expected to contribute to strengthening faculty capacity for systematic curriculum planning, constructive alignment, competency-based assessment and continuous curriculum improvement. It thereby supports the broader institutional goal of developing systematic, competency-focused and learner-centred dental education.

A two-day Faculty Development Program (FDP) on Competency-Based Dental Education (CBDE) was successfully conducted on 29th and 30th May 2026 to enhance faculty expertise in structured and competency-based assessment methods.
The program provided in-depth training on Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), Objective Structured Practical Examination (OSPE), and Structured Viva Cards, enabling faculty members to strengthen their teaching, assessment, and evaluation practices across various dental disciplines.
The impact of the program was evaluated using the Kirkpatrick Four-Level Model, which demonstrated positive outcomes in knowledge acquisition and the effective implementation of learned skills within departmental teaching activities.
The FDP concluded successfully, reinforcing the institution’s commitment to advancing competency-based dental education and improving the quality of student assessment.

The Department of Dental Education (DDE) Cell of our institution organized an insightful faculty development programme on Good Clinical Practice (GCP) on 27th April 2026, The session aimed to enhance awareness and implementation of ethical and quality standards in clinical research and practice among faculty members.
The event featured Dr. Jessica Monteiro, a renowned expert in clinical research and medical ethics, as the Guest speaker. Dr. Jessica Monteiro delivered a comprehensive and engaging lecture covering the key principles of GCP, including understanding good clinical practice: A guide to ethical clinical trials and comprehensive guide to ICH guidelines, patient safety, data integrity, informed consent and protocol compliance.
The session began with a welcome address by Dr. Viplavi C, who highlighted the objectives of the workshop and the importance of adhering to globally accepted clinical standards. Dr. Jessica Monteiro presentation included real-world examples, current regulatory insights, and practical challenges in clinical research.
An interactive Q&A session followed, where attendees actively participated and sought clarity on various aspects of ethical clinical practice and research documentation.
